CBD, or cannabidiol, is a legal, non-psycho-active compound found in Hemp or Cannabis. CBD is really very clever, mimicking our endocannabinoids to bring balance to the body. The Chinese have used Cannabis for its medicinal qualities for over 5,000 years. This was followed by the Egyptians, Greeks & Romans who also used the plant to treat a wide array of ailments.

Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is designed to keep our internal functions such as pain, inflammation, memory, appetite and mood operating at optimal levels (homeostasis), if an outside force causes any pain, discomfort or you experience some sort of injury or fever then the ECS takes over and helps return it back to its ideal operation.

The ECS consists of three components:

(1) Endocannabinoids - very similar to cannabinoids (called endogenous cannabinoids)

(2) Cannabinoid receptors - Endocannabinoids bind to them and signal that the ECS needs to take action.

(3) Enzymes - are responsible for the manufacture and disposal of endocannabinoids.

Our body manufactures its own endocannabinoids which interact with these receptors, communicating messages concerning to many internal functions. CBD is a Phyto cannabinoid, that is a substance derived from a plant (phyto) and replicates the endocannabinoids already produced by our body.

Endocannabinoids can bind to the two main endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found inthe brain and central nervous system, moderating areas such as mood, memory & pain. CB2 receptors are mainly in the peripheral organs, especially those associated with the immune system.

Many factors effect the efficiency of our ECS, such as genetics, stress, diet and exercise. There’s now mounting evidence that CBD compounds help to supplement and support its many functions by limiting the overproduction of one neurotransmitter or increasing the function of another, as and when needed, to bring natural harmony to the body and improve health.
